Mazamas publishes and distributes a printed and bound annual report that contains not only membership and organizational information, but also contains stories, trip reports, and photography from the past year. I didn't hear about the annual until after the due date for submission, but i was still able to get a fair number of photos in, including the front cover. The annual is printed in black and white, and since it's primarily an inexpensive text medium, the quality isn't fantastic either. I kept that in mind when choosing photos to submit. Normally the best black and white images are the ones that can capture the incredible texture and detail that's unattainable with color photography - however in this case, the details and textures would probably be lost to the print quality. Instead, i searched for high-contrast images with recognizable locations, views, and activities. This photo is from the north ridge of Mount Washington. It was taken using a Nikon D70 with a Tokina 12-24 lens at 12mm, 1/640, f8. I fiddled with the contrast and highlights, then mixed the channels to emulate the yellow filter I would have used with black and white film. Thanks to the incredible wide angle of the lens and the corresponding depth of field, F8 was sufficient to resolve everything from the hand a couple inches away to Mt. Jefferson and 3 Finger Jack in the distance. Mazama members can quickly recognize the mountains in the distance and determine the mountain, route, and location the picture was taken. There is also plenty of seemingly empty space for the title to appear without disrupting any composition of the image.
