Slideshow with Audio in Powerpoint
The process of adding a soundtrack to a powerpoint slideshow is significantly more difficult than it should be and quite counterintuitive. After following directions from help, microsoft, and other sources, i found that lots of things don't work as they should, but the following method works repeatably with only a few steps.

  1. choose insert->movies and sounds->Sound from File
  2. Choose the file from your browser. Note that these files WILL NOT be embedded. They won't move to another computer if you copy the presentation
  3. Choose to Automatically start the sound in the slideshow
    add a sound to powerpoint
  4. Powerpoint will put a speaker in the middle of the slide. You might want to move this off to the side
  5. Choose the 'custom animation' menu
  6. choose the 'effect options' for your song
    set sound options in powerpoint
  7. Set the number of slides to play for. 999 should be enough.
    set sound to play past slide transitions
  8. Choose 'Slide Transitions'
  9. Set advance to 'automatically after' and enter the number of seconds
  10. Choose 'apply to all slides'
    set slides to autotransition
If you would like a second song to play, calculate the length of the song (or just play the presentation) and repeat the process on the slide you'd like the second song to begin
