Taking Care of Addy

Short Version

  • Walk her morning and early evening
  • Feed her half a cup of food after you walk her
  • Give her a treat if you're leaving without her
  • She likes crunchy veggies and apple cores, any most food.
  • We don't let her in the kitchen or in bed
  • She's allowed on the furniture when she's invited
  • She sleeps burrowed under the blanket in her bed.

Schedule

  • she wakes up about 8:00
  • feed and walk her by 9 AM if possible
  • she likes being lazy all day
  • feed her again between 4 and 6
  • walk her sometime after 5 (before or after eating - doesn't matter)
  • she usually gets in bed on her own around 9 or 10

feeding

  • She eats 1 cup a day - 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night
  • she wolfs her food down and always seems hungry- she's fine
  • she does like to nibble on grass even when she's not hungry
  • fill her water bowl when you feed her

treats

  • We usually only give her treats when we have to lock her up
  • She loves fresh veggies, esp. crunchy stuff like carrots and brocolli stems, just don't feed her directly from the table or the kitchen
  • She also likes ice cubes

walking

  • we usually walk her around the church since there's grass
  • biodegradable doggie bags are in the table by the door
  • She usually goes twice a day, but can hold #2 all day sometimes
  • she'll go within 10 minutes
  • she doesn't really come when called. avoid letting her off leash

longer walks

  • up everett, left on 25th, across burnside to stairs up to washington park
  • down 17th, 20th, or 22nd is quieter and nicer than 18th, 19th, 21s/23rd
  • there is a dog park on 19th and glisan, but it is best to avoid it since she might not come to you if she's off leash

driving

  • she's pretty well behaved in the car
  • she'll stay in the back seat if you put her there
  • have a bottle of water and a bowl
  • she also likes to have her black fleece blanket
  • don't leave her alone in the car unless the windows are cracked in the shade
  • park in a remote corner of the parking lot and she'll be quiet
  • she falls asleep pretty fast if she's been walking/hiking

leaving her home

  • close the bedroom door
  • close the gate
  • she CAN jump over the gate, but she doesn't know it, so it works well enough.
  • leave the red kong in there with her
  • it helps to distract her (with food) while you leave
    • leave while she's eating breakfast/dinner
    • give her a treat but not more than 1 or 2 a day
